Our latest collection, Tender is the Night, includes one of the most famous lingerie designs, the naughty French knicker.
Playful and subtly sexy the French knicker dates way, way back. Originally named the 'tap pant', they were later coined 'French knickers' (thankfully!) in the 1930s following the garment's popularity among the flashing performers of the Moulin Rouge.
Now or Never's Camille Silk French Knicker
In keeping with tradition and our love of silks, Now or Never's Camille French Knicker is made from 100% silk and comes in black with subtle self stripe. It's the perfect match with our Camille Silk Cami (pictured above).
Our Euphemia Silk Slip from recent collection, Tender is the Night, is named after Olivia's grandmother, who also designed and made lingerie back in the 1930s in a small studio on Bond Street, London.
We are lucky to have a few of her garments, one being a gorgeous silk playsuit. We took inspiration from its design lines to create our Euphemia Silk Slip.
We wanted to acknowledge Euphemia's life and work in this collection - not only for her beautiful designs - but we were inspired by the strong independent character she was. She was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1909, and lived a full life during a very turbulent time in European history.
Before marrying, she made the most of the single life (like all the ladies should)- she learned cooking in Switzerland at Le Cordon Bleu, studied design under a Parisian dressmaker in London and gambled in Monte-Carlo.
In her early twenties, she met her first husband and was stationed with him, only being married a year, Austen Keen, was killed by a torpedo onboard a naval ship off the coast of Gilbratar. Heart-broken, and things didn't get easier, with the outbreak of WWII, now a widow returned to London to assist the troops, she became a WREN transporting soliders and supplies.
She later met her second husband, a cornel in the British Army, Roland, who she married in 1945 and moved to the Isle of Mull, far north of Scotland. She had five children, ran a hotel and among many other things drove around in a Rolls Royce!
Her life reads a little like a movie, and her ability to live a life pursuing her own interests, travelling as well as serving her country, and raising a family is an extraordinary feat in any era. So, here's to you, Effie, a true inspiriation!
Still from her favourite movie, Doctor Zhivago
Her favourite book, The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico (1940)

Cheeky French knickers and silk slips
Lingerie label Now or Never is turning one, and celebrate with the release of a new collection of silk underwear. Tender is the Night, the label’s second ever collection, combines modern aesthetics with a nod to the flirty 1930s. It draws inspiration from the book of the same name by author F. Scott Fitzgerald and garments created by co-founder, Olivia Lacey’s grandmother.
The collection’s palette of navy, blush and black silk fabrics is paired with subtle and sexy designs. It keeps comfort in mind while offering a little bit of luxury for every day, and is a must have for lingerie lovers.
“One of my favourites is the Camille French knicker, a loose leg design once known as the ‘tap-pant’, and our take is a little shorter, a little cheekier,” says designer and co-founder Emma Lodge, “Paired with the Camille camisole, it’s a gorgeous set for day or night”.
“The sleek fitting Euphemia silk slip echoes the design lines of Olivia’s grandmother’s garments and is perfect for wearing under summer dresses,” says Lodge.
Lacey says she was delighted that they were able to reference her late grandmother’s work in the new collection.
“Euphemia learned her craft from a Parisian dress maker. She worked from a little studio on Bond Street in London in the early 1930s, where she created and brought her beautiful designs to life,” says Lacey.
“I love to hear stories about Olivia’s grandmother. In a way, she exemplifies what Now or Never is all about; a modern woman - she travelled, studied and pursued her interests,” says Lodge.
Tender is the Night is available online from 4 December at Now-or-never.co.nz
About Now or Never
Long-time friends Emma Lodge and Olivia Lacey formed the label Now or Never in 2013. They developed the initial concepts for the brand by talking to sister lingerie lovers about what they liked to wear and what made them feel gorgeous.
Taking these comments onboard and drawing inspiration from favourite fashion eras and a love of silk, the pair came up with designs that combine details from past influences with contemporary styles.
